Cluny Drive

Toronto, ON

Overlooking a lush ravine, this residence adds contemporary aspiration to its historic neighbourhood. Its textured exterior is crafted from limestone and washed brick in response to the materiality of its surroundings. Guided by the client’s social lifestyle and art collection, the interior was designed to feel intimate yet spacious through an open floorplan. To mediate the desire for both exposure and privacy, large street-facing windows flood the home with natural light, while a custom-designed privacy screen shields the pedestrian view.

The interior finishes serve as a natural extension of the exterior. Unprocessed wood, brick, and Beauvale limestone create a textured backdrop for the client’s art collection.

Many details, including the millwork and fireplace, were fabricated to fit.

At the rear of the home, an intimate landscaped garden featuring Ai Weiwei’s Iron Root sculpture serves as a focal point, viewed from the main living space.

The completed design is richly layered and thoughtfully attuned to its urban setting.
