Joan and Martin Goldfarb Gallery

Toronto, ON

The competition-winning design for the stand-alone Art Gallery of York University (AGYU) presents a bold new vision representative of the institution’s progressive program. Flanked by the greenery of the campus common and embracing a rejuvenated arts courtyard, the building’s gently arced massing reaches toward the northern and southern portions of the campus, drawing people in with a welcoming and distinct presence. The AGYU transforms a small infill site into a campus hub that connects visitors through the shared experience of art.

Once inside, the 12,000-square-foot building wraps four galleries around an intimate gathering space, providing the flexibility to highlight the AGYU’s permanent collection and combine for larger, temporary shows—creating an immersive experience of art, with intimate outlooks to nature embedded throughout. Connected to the Accolade East Building and situated next to the Centre for Film and Theatre, the AGYU acts as the public foyer and entryway to this re-envisioned arts complex. The ground level opens onto a landscaped courtyard and sculpture garden, allowing for spill-out programming and a strong pedestrian connection to the south campus.

Early model development

The project will activate the infill site between the Accolade East Building and the Centre for Film and Theatre.

Fronting the campus green and easily accessible by public transit, the AGYU will act as a great connector along York Boulevard and a beacon of social and civic engagement.

Opening onto the landscaped courtyard and sculpture garden, the ground level will blur indoor and outdoor spaces, providing opportunities for spill-out programming.

Planted with native, drought-tolerant species, the garden will serve as both an accessible thoroughfare and a natural extension of the gallery experience.
