North York General Hospital Birthing Centre Redevelopment

Toronto, ON

The proposed Birthing Centre Redevelopment envisions a collaborative effort between North York General Hospital, Hariri Pontarini Architects, and NORR to transform approximately 27,000 square feet into a welcoming, patient-centered environment. The intent is to create a space where patients feel supported and empowered throughout the birthing experience. To achieve this, the design concept incorporates features aligned with the project’s core themes: welcoming, privacy, inclusivity, comfort, cleanliness, calmness, intuitive wayfinding, and emotional support.

A key element of the design is a large extension over the lobby atrium, providing a visual presence that eases wayfinding. This extension would house a new reception area designed to greet and guide patients upon arrival. Additionally, the nursing station is envisioned to be relocated to provide clear sightlines across the labour and delivery ward, while the triage area would be expanded to offer a more spacious and comfortable experience for patients.

Inclusivity is a crucial aspect of this project. The space has been designed to cater to all families. The overall goal of the NYGH Birthing Centre Redevelopment is to create a space that is not only functional, but also beautiful and calming for patients to welcome new life.

The design team incorporated materials such as bronze, wood, and terrazzo to create a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere.
The corridor brings the space together with familiar materials and warm colours, making navigation feel natural and secure for patients.

The postpartum area features an earth-toned palette, offering a grounded and serene environment. In contrast, the delivery zone draws inspiration from greens and browns, evoking strength and a connection to nature.
