The Purling Place residence is sited on a wide lot, at the end of a cul-de-sac, in a quiet suburban neighbourhood. The ‘T’-shaped ground plan allows the home to stretch to the limits of the property. By maximizing the occupation of the landscape in this way, well-defined front and rear courts were created and oriented to maximize views and exposure to natural light.
The interior entertaining, work, and recreation spaces are organized around the curved Car Court on the entry side, and the Garden Court overlooking the private rear yard. A double-height centre hall acts as a fulcrum, visually and physically linking these two exterior spaces while separating the quieter areas of the house — the master suite and office/library — from the busier family and service areas.
