Space Transformation Project, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre

Toronto, ON

The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (PMCC) Space Transformation Project is a complete overhaul of PMCC’s ground floor, as well as select staff work areas. HPA’s approach to the Transformation Project prioritizes the patient experience, emphasizing that patients are at the centre of their individual treatment plans and are partners in their care. Beautiful, uplifting spaces empower patients and their families through the use of light, landscape, art, and materials.

With multiple entrances and passageways, navigating the existing ground floor had become a challenge due to additions and changes made over time on an as-needed basis. HPA’s design enhances wayfinding and allows for effortless navigation through the new, open-concept space. The ground floor of PMCC is where the journey toward healing begins. The warm and welcoming environment serves as a restorative setting for patient care, with dignified, de-institutionalized spaces that reflect the level of personalized care Princess Margaret delivers. Amenities and services support a range of patient needs, creating an environment where one can comfortably spend the day.

Spaces are organized with meaningful adjacencies, making wayfinding intuitive and efficient. Patients can navigate with purpose, yet find quiet spaces for rest and reflection. Its curves create intimate nooks to meet or relax.

The main entrances were enhanced, elevating the institution’s street presence and providing accessible entry. Regrading, recladding, landscaping, and the addition of glass vestibules at the entry areas make arrival inviting and accessible.

“To step into Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is to be embraced by an unexpected intimacy”

Stefan Novakovik

The patient-centred design sets a new global standard in healthcare hospitality, providing communal gathering spaces and featured amenities that allow patients to feel at home in the space.

Enabling visitors to manage themselves where possible, accessibility is supported by ensuring that spaces conform to current accessibility standards. The fluidity of the space makes tangible the intimacy, warmth, and dignified atmosphere of PMCC, and helps visitors orient themselves as they move through the space.
